6 Year Programme - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM)

The D.V.M. degree offered by the faculty of veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Brno  is recognized by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the Advisory Committee on Veterinary Training, among others. FVM administers the programme with the co-operation of the Faculty of Veterinry Hygiene and Ecology (FVHE) and the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the UVPS Brno. Today, there are more than 700 students in the D.V.M. programme.

The D.V.M Degree Programme

The degree programme provides a global education in the field of diagnostics, therapy and prevention of contagious and non-contagious diseases of animals, and basic knowledge of animal origin and food hygiene.

Main career options available for graduates of the FVM:

• Private veterinary practitioners
• State veterinary administration
• Hygiene and technology of food industry, veterinary institutes, laboratories, research institutes, pharmaceutical firms.
• Positions at Universities and secondary schools

The study period is six years (12 semesters). The total teaching hours is 5,149, consisting of 1,470 hours of lectures and 3,679 hours of practice (seminars, practice and the research at clinics). Each semester lasts between 12 to 15 weeks with approximately 25 hours of direct teaching. After the completion of each semester, an examinational term follows. Students will take 44 exams in total throughout the whole period of study.

Studies are concluded with a rigorous state exam consisting of two Compulsory Exams (Food Hygiene and Legislation and Infectious Diseases) and three to five Elective State Rigorous Exams (Dogs and Cats Diseases; Ruminants Diseases; Equine Diseases; Dissertation Defence; Poultry Diseases; Avian, Reptiles & Small Mammals Diseases; Swine Diseases; Clinical Pathology). In addition, students must complete compulsory assignments which include practice at clinics and diagnostic laboratories.

In general, the study program follows the basic outline below:

Year I
Students develop a basic understanding of the Life Sciences underpinning veterinary medicine and become familiar with veterinary and medical terms.

Year II
Students delve more deeply into the Life Sciences, particularly anatomy, physiology and veterinary genetics. Students start studying microbiology and learn about animal nutrition and feeding.

Year III
Students work in the field with animals to support their classroom learning in toxicology, animal hygiene and pharmacology. Students are exposed to imaging diagnostics, and focus on clinical diagnostics and treatment of diseases.

Year IV
Students continue working in the field, honoring their skills and learning new ones as they work on a variety of animals, from small fur animals to ruminants and swine.

Year V
Surgery techniques become a main focus as students investigate various animal diseases as well as learn animal obstetrics and gynecology.

Year VI
Students finish higher-level courses and prepare for, and take, obligatory state examinations.
