St. Matthew's University School of Medicine

About SMU

Providing quality education focused on the success of our students is the foundation of St. Matthew's University. Our faculty and staff are as committed to your dreams as you are, and our small class sizes mean you receive personalized attention.

Since 1997, more than fifteen hundred students have obtained their MD and DVM degrees from SMU. Our graduates have earned residencies and/or permanent licensure in more than 40 states in the U.S., Canada, and numerous other countries. Our students achieve exceptional scholastic success, with U.S. licensing examination pass rates comparable to U.S. schools and well above the average of other non-U.S. schools.

SMU is located on the beautiful and safe Caribbean island, Grand Cayman. The island offers a highly developed infrastructure, including two state-of-the-art hospitals, hundreds of restaurants, world class hotels, and a thriving tourist industry. Grand Cayman is an hour’s flight from Miami, and has direct flights from many U.S. and Canadian cities.

Basic Sciences Curriculum

Our curriculum integrates basic and clinical science to give students an understanding of the human body in health and disease. This approach enables students to use their knowledge not just to treat patients, but also to prevent disease and promote good health.

Throughout the first two years, students participate in a series of clinical medicine courses that focus on the art of patient care and preventive medicine. What is unique to St Matthew's School of Medicine program is that these courses are integrated with the Cayman Island's world class healthcare system. The courses offer students access to hospital and community clinic experience and hospital based research.

Semester One: You will start with the basics: Cellular Biology, Histology and Gross Anatomy.

Semester Two: Now you will move on to the body’s molecular building blocks (Biochemistry), the complex interplay among the body’s different systems (Physiology), as well as Epidemiology and Medical Genetics.

Semester Three: Keep learning about what makes us healthy with studies in Neuroscience; and also what makes us unhealthy, (Microbiology); as well as Medical Psychology and Medical and Legal Ethics.

Semester Four: Build your knowledge about disease (Pathology) as well as therapeutic efforts to deal with it (Pharmacology). You will also learn how to take a history and examine a patient.

Semester Five: Learn more about disease in Pathology and get extensive preparation for the USMLE Step 1.

At the end of the fifth semester of Basic Sciences, students leave Grand Cayman to start clinical clerkship rotations. At midterm of the fifth semester, students participate in a Clinical Orientation where they receive information on available clerkships. Each student completes a Clinical In-Processing File that includes his or her three preferred training sites. Every effort is made to assign students to the hospital that best suits their qualifications, requirements, and desires.

Core rotations will be taken and completed in a teaching hospital.

Third Year Core Rotations cover six specialties:

Internal Medicine 12 weeks
Surgery 12 weeks
Pediatrics   6 weeks
Obstetrics & Gynecology   6 weeks
Family Practice   4 weeks
Psychiatry   6 weeks

Student Training at Cayman Hospitals

The medical students of St. Matthew’s University gain hospital experience in collaboration with the island’s two state-of-the-art hospitals. Students visit these hospitals while touring with physicians, making patient rounds and reviewing charts with physicians and nurses.

Both hospitals are only a few minutes from the SMU campus.

The Cayman Island Hospital is a 124 bed facility located in George Town. The hospital offers numerous specialty services including orthopedics, rheumatology, radiology, gastroenterology, dental and eye clinic as well as emergency services, operating rooms, maternity unit and general practitioner offices. A pharmacy and professional library are also located within this modern facility.

The Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital (CTMH) is a private, 18 bed facility located on Walkers Road in Grand Cayman. The CTMH offers 24 hour Urgent Care available 7 days a week along with the Family Practice office which is open 7 days a week. This modern facility houses two operating rooms as well as a maternity unit with four private birthing suites. Specialty services include cardiology, podiatry, dermatology, and psychiatry.

Clinical Rotations

The Clinical Clerkship is an exciting and enriching aspect of medical training. It requires both determination and sacrifice. The Clinical Dean and staff will work closely with students to ensure they fully benefit from clinical rotations and prepare for successful residencies.
