Pre-Medical Program

Many students with the desire and ability to earn an M.D. begin the process of applying to medical school, only to discover that they lack the pre-medical education requirements.

This is especially true for students who decided to focus on medicine as a career late in their undergraduate experience.

For these students, Medical University of the Americas offers a Pre-medical Program on its campus in Nevis that is specifically designed to address the missing elements in your undergraduate pre-medical coursework, and provide a smooth transition into the Doctor of Medicine Basic Science program.  

Basic Sciences

The five semesters of the Basic Sciences curriculum can be summarized quite simply: First you will learn about the healthy body, and then you will study the unhealthy body.

Along the way you will get your first taste of how to apply that knowledge clinically (which will be the primary focus of your second five semesters).

At the completion of your Basic Sciences semesters you will take the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1.

Medical University of the Americas provides you with a comprehensive course of study in the Basic Sciences that will prepare you for the USMLE, your clinical studies and residency. 

Clinical Education

Your clinical education at Medical University of the Americas takes place primarily in the second half of your academic program: Semesters 6 to 10—your final semesters before earning your M.D. and entering a residency program.

The Clinical Medicine program at MUA is 72 weeks:

42 weeks of required core rotations in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
30 weeks are elective clinical rotations that may be in any of the various medical specialties, depending upon the student’s future goals.
