Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz was inaugurated on October 1, 2002 as a merger of two Medical Schools: the Medical Academy of Lodz and the Military Medical Academy of Lodz by the Act of the Polish Parliament of July 27, 2002. The Medical Academy of Lodz was founded on January 1,1950 by separating from the University of Lodz three faculties: Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical.

The Military Medical Academy of Lodz was established by the Order of the Ministry of National Defense of May 1958, however its traditions date back to 1922. In the course of their existence, the Medical Academy and the Military Medical Academy have graduated over 34,000 physicians, dentists, pharmacists and other medical specialists. The Medical University continues the tradition of both medical schools, being the successor of their rich heritage. 

The Medical University of Lodz is the largest state-owned medical university in Poland whose mission is:

  • educating students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and medicine-allied disciplines;
  • educating research staff and conducting research work;
  • conducting postgraduate training of highly qualified health care system staff;
  • participating in health care programs set by the social health care system.  
  • University Teaching Activity

The concept of up-to-date and comprehensive professional training of medical manpower is being improved all the time. The process of education has been focused on preparing specialists for work in various communities and national health care systems. Our educational offer, gradually and consequently modified and widened, has been adjusted to requirements laid down in the resolutions validated by our Government within the European Union co-operation. Following Poland's entry into the European Union on May 1, 2004 the University offers an automatic recognition of the degree for most of the faculties within all 25 countries of the European Union.

The University employs almost 1,600 research and didactic staff, including over 300 independent researchers, i.e. 170 full professors, 190 assistant and associate professors as well as nearly  900 PhD academics. Our educational programs arouse great interest among both Polish and international students. 

Currently, over 8,500 Polish  students are receiving their education within medical and medicine-related areas at various faculties. Our education offer also comprises advanced studies at the Faculty of Postgraduate Training with over 300 postgraduate students commencing their education each year. Medical teaching  in English was initiated in 2003/2004. Presently  nearly 400 foreign students from various countries (USA, Canada, Taiwan, Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Spain, Kenia, Nigeria, Zambia) attend medical and dental courses. They are studying:

4-year MD programs,

 6-year MD programs,

5-year DMD programs.

The quality of our teaching remains one of the highest among Polish universities, which is reflected by official inspections and rankings. The students of the Faculty of Medicine are the winners of the most prestigious scientific awards like “Medical Laurels” of the Polish Academy of Science or Best Student Awards like “Primus Inter Pares.

Science and Research

The Medical University of Lodz is one of the leading medical research centers in Poland. In one academic year over a hundred research grants are awarded, as well as numerous research contracts. At present over 300 individual research projects are being conducted, of which over 100 are new ones and more than 200 are continued. The Medical University of Lodz has been carrying an extensive international scientific cooperation with such foreign academic and research centers as:

  • Institute of Biomedical Engineering CNR, Italy;
  • Academic Medical Center by the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands;
  • King’s College London, United Kingdom;
  • University of Manchester, United Kingdom;
  • Universite de Geneve, Switzerland

Within this co-operation over 500 short official visits of research and teaching staff to 46 universities took place, 22 staff members received foreign scholarships and 49 foreign scientists representing leading European and world-famous teaching and research centers were invited to our University.Furthermore, the majority of University chairs, clinics and departments directly co-operate with foreign centers through staff exchange programs (workshops).

Clinical Activity

At present, the Medical University has over 1600 hospital beds in five Teaching Hospitals that provide medical services for patients, being the essential base for research work and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Moreover, 34 hospital wards and departments with almost 1200 beds localized in non-University municipal hospitals are used by the Medical University.The University Teaching Hospitals and University-affiliated departments constitute a basic source for highly specialized diagnostic and treatment services provided by more than 1250 medical professionals including 750 specialists with professors and associate professors who take care of health needs of the Lodz region community and promote health-related programs.

Each year, more than 55 000 patients are hospitalized in our hospital departments, and over 50 000 patients in university-affiliated wards.High level of diagnostic and treatment services rendered by Medical University hospitals is reflected by its position in the most popular hospital ranking. In the nationwide classification, our 36 hospital departments ranked among the top ten in their specialties.

Students' Academic Activities

Students of the Medical University take part in international  academic exchange programs. At the same time students from European universities come to study at MUL as exchange students in the frame of LLP-Erasmus program.  Each year several  MUL students complete their 3 to 6 month-long hospital  practice in countires around Europe: in  Italy, Germany, France, Slovakia, the U.K. and other.

Students' Scientific Society has been involved in active popularization of research work among students, organization of scientific conferences and co-ordination of over 50 Students' Scientific Groups.

Accreditation

If you choose to be a student of MUL  you don’t need to worry about accrediatation issues.
Our University is listed in the most popular and up-to-date online resource which is International Medical Education Directory (IMED) which provides information about  international medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate government agencies in the countries in which they are located. In Poland  it is the  Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Further to that our programs are recognized by Educational Commission for  Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that makes our students eligible to pursue a medical career in  the USA and Canada (sit to board exams and apply for esidency and licensure).

Our medical and dentistry diplomas are also subject to automatic recognition in the European Union which Poland joined in May 2004.
