Visa Requirements & Health Insurance

Visa Requirements & Health Insurance

Visa requirements

International students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to obtain a B-1 visitor’s visa from a U.S. consulate prior to entering the United States for their clinical clerkships. Some students, such as Canadian citizens, are exempt from the visa requirement. For more information about student visas, please visit the High Commission of Antigua & Barbuda - Passports and Visas.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance is mandatory while students are enrolled at AUA. Students can either enroll in the Insurance Plan provided by AUA or provide proof of private coverage to the Bursar 30 days before commencement of semester. All American University of Antigua students are required to have medical and Emergency Evacuation insurance while on Antigua. Students will be automatically enrolled and charged for this coverage at the beginning of each semester.
Please read the insurance brochure that describes the coverage underwritten by United Healthcare Insurance Company. You can compare it to your current policy and decide which is best for you. Click here to view the Insurance Brochure.

Declining coverage: If you wish to waive the University’s coverage, your policy MUST include an Emergency Evacuation provision as a result of a medical emergency.Proof of coverage is required and you need to present a photo copy of your insurance card AND a letter from your insurance company that states that the Emergency Evacuation option is part of your insurance coverage at registration. If you cannot produce proof of medical coverage, including Emergency Evacuation insurance, you will be billed for the school’s medical coverage.

Dependent Coverage: If you plan to have dependents with you in Antigua you can enroll them in the health insurance program. You can pick up an enrollment form at the time of registration and sending it directly to United Healthcare with your payment. We strongly encourage that all dependents have formal medical and Emergency Evacuation insurance while in Antigua. If you have questions about the coverage please e-mail them to benefits@auamed.org or call 212-661-8899 x131.

Please note: The medical insurance coverage is not available for the citizens of Antigua. The coverage waiver document must be provided within 10 days after the start of the semester or it will be applied in the following semester.
