James Cook University Medical School

Programs

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery

The School of Medicine at James Cook University offers a six-year undergraduate degree in medicine and surgery (MBBS). The course is full time and based in Townsville for the first four years. Years 5 and 6 are devoted entirely to clinical practice and the majority of students are required to relocate to other School of Medicine teaching sites in Cairns, Mackay and Darwin for the entire two years.

The course aims to produce graduates of the highest academic standards, who can progress to medical practice and to further studies in medical specialties. Graduates will be uniquely qualified in the fields of rural/ remote and Indigenous health, and tropical medicine.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Honours
The program is available to enrolled students in the MBBS program during years five and six. Eligible students will usually be those in the top 25% of the cohort although students with an interest in research can also apply to be considered.

The Honours research program runs in parallel to the final two years of the MBBS course. The Honours program provides training in research skills and students will undertake their own independent project under the supervision of academic and research staff, resulting in completion of a thesis. The thesis accounts for the greater majority of the assessment mark, but other assessable components include a literature review and an oral presentation of the work.

There are competitive Faculty Scholarships available.

Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons)
This program is available to students between years three and four, or between years four and five. Eligible students will be those who have been in the top 25% of the cohort in each of the first three years of the program.

This is a research-based year and students will be offered a menu of programs from interested staff in any part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences. All proposed research programs need to be approved by the Board of Studies to ensure that they are achievable in the time frame allowed, have the appropriate degree of intellectual input from, and challenge to the students and that the supervisor has adequate resources for the completion of the program. Students will submit a thesis describing the project with appropriate analysis and discussion of data collected.

All supervisors must be on the JCU list of approved supervisors.

The thesis accounts for the greater majority of the assessment mark, but other assessable components include a literature review and an oral presentation of the work.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry provides scholarships to offset the extra year of HECS to the top two applicants in any year.

Accreditation

The JCU Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery degree holds full Australian Medical Council accreditation, so you graduate with work-ready qualifications recognised anywhere in Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
